When you are a GenZ but your parents are GenX : mobiles
Hii (lol) ok so today’s rant: mobiles. Pfff. The most amazing yet annoying invention on the planet. Ok so let me be clear. Annoying for parents as well as us. Them ‘cause they can’t figure most of it and us ‘cause they hate us for using it (XD). Just kidding. Not really (those who know know).
Anyway
I don’t know what their problem is. Why can’t we use the mobiles to fulfill their purpose, A.K.A, keeping connected with our friends and entertainment. Especially when WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A FREAKING PANDEMIC!!
Like honestly, if everything was normal and we were meeting our friends on a regular basis, going to school etc etc, I would have understood the restriction to an extent (not that we would be getting time to chat on mobile anyway).
But, when we are stuck at home, restricted to seeing just the 2-3 same faces day in and day out (who bothers to switch on the camera anyway? Most of us are in our sleepwear and half-awake and the rest of us can’t be bothered), you NEED some time to connect with your friends.
Buutttt…..
We said NO! YOU CAN LIVE WITHOUT YOUR FRIENDS AND CONCENTRATE ON YOUR STUDIES blah blah blah…..
I really want to reply:
NO I CAN’T SURVIVE WITHOUT MY FRIENDS OK?! I DON’T WANT TO. THERE ARE THINGS THAT YOU CAN’T UNDERSTAND OK? AND THEY ARE UNDERSTOOD BY MY FRIENDS! SO NOW, LET ME CHAT IN PEACE FOR A WHILE I’LL GO TO STUDY IN SOMETIME CHILLLL!!!
Funny thing, if you do tell them this, the reply is along the lines of “Kid, we were your age once so we know everything.”
Like, excuse me?! I have to EXPLAIN memes to you and that too a proper explanation of 5-10 minutes at least. And you say that you know EVERYTHING!! What sort of a joke is this??
I don’t have to explain memes to my friends, do I?? Then why do you think you know everything about being a teen in the 21st Century?!
Then comes the infamous line of “when we were your age”. DUDE! When you were my age, you listened to music on a WALKMAN! Times have drastically changed in between the time YOU were teen and now.
WHYYYYY do you expect us to do any of the stuff you did at that time? I mean
WAS THERE A PANDEMIC WHEN YOU WERE MY AGE? DID INSTAGRAM EVEN EXIST OR ,WAIT, DID PEOPLE EVEN CARE ABOUT WHAT VERSION OF MOBILE THEY USED?
The answer to all of these questions is a big fat bold underlined and extremely emphasised NO. Then why compare?
Let us make our mistakes. No doubt you are capable and experienced enough to GUIDE us but in the process of guiding they knowing/unknowingly start dictating most of our lives. I mean I need a place to grumble and discuss about the amount of unfairness in my life don’t I? They can gossip about how much ever they want but we can’t? Not fair!
And the BEST part (and the most hypocritical part if you ask me) is that they find us chatting in between a break or even AFTER doing ALL of our work, they fly of the hook with a long lecture about how should we should study and make our future (in the time they are done, we would have chatted and even sat down for studying, but you do you).
AND IF WE SAY THAT THEIR SCREEN TIME IS MAINLY DUE TO THEM! OMG! It’s like we have to run to escape a fire. They claim that it is for work but since when is “what are you doing right now” or “these kids are so tiring” or whatever you people are talking about work?!
Now let me justify my screen time:
6 hours of school (blame Covid-19 for this not us)
Then go for lunch
Again 2 hours of classes (online, again, not my fault)
Doing my assignments (need I remind you that I need my device for this as well?!)
Then take a break.
Now here’s where the problem lies, I would usually read a book but nowadays I chat (yeah sue me for wanting to talk to my friends) or surf YouTube. Now YT is a great stress buster not going to lie, you get to discover the weirdest of people and get to know about new bands/artists/celebrities.
TRY IT PARENTS! Being a fan isn’t going to harm you! It’ll help you bond with us even more (honestly I’m too close to my parents but you know). But no! For them we are being dumb for fangirling over someone (not true. It’s fun to watch other people doing strange stuff)
Anyway this is for about an hour and half and then I head back to study but then again “I keep wasting my time”.
Ugh! Anyways let me sign off before I’m scolded for my ‘increased screen time’ and I’ll bring you another relatable blog soon enough. Bye bye.
WHY IS THIS SO RELATABLE???!!
